Yurt Hang
a family of hangers for yurt organization and decoration
Design Specifications
A successful yurt lattice hanger will:
- be plenty strong to hold my instruments
- fit into the yurt aesthetically
- be compatible with existing guitar hanger hooks I have
- efficient geometry to conserve material
Constraints
My main constraint is time, I don't want this project to become procrastination from actually organizing or get in the way of my other projects.
Version 1

V1 was largely a failure. I had difficulties getting a smooth organic form, this was my first time using SubD. I should have started with sketching. I also had my first print failure, the filament got twisted and pulled the spool over, unplugging the 3D printer in the process. I tried to resume the print but the bed adhesion had failed.

The print orientation and tree density caused the trees to fuse to the part. I also had difficulties with my STL export settings, as shown by the visible triangular faces on the part.
This test print did allow me to test the tolerances and fit on the yurt lattice. Measurements were good and the guitar hook fit well in the key channel.
Version 2
I decided to start fresh. I learned how to use a reflected plane for my SubD object modifications to keep the part symmetrical.

This new design is finally smooth and it also is vaguely guitar pick shaped! I reused the subtraction geometries to carve out the lattice shape and hanger key hole:
